Patinformatics for Research and Business Planning

March 21, 2012: Conference on “Patinformatics for Research and Business Planning”, Pune, organized by CSIR (URDIP) and Society for Information Science (SIS).

I was invited to speak on topic  "Best Practices in IP Research during R&D lifecycle". The abstract is given below:
In recent years, IP research has become an integral part of the R&D process. Globally, R&D teams are increasingly utilizing IP research and tools to update themselves of latest innovations, identify strategic opportunities to create new innovations to avoid reinventing the wheel and be aware of potential risks. As R&D and IP analytics are separate functions, these are typically performed by separate expert teams sitting inside/outside the same organization. The presentation analyzes the various collaboration models used in the industry, and discusses some best practices on extracting best results from the partnership between the two specialist teams.

Highlights of Global IP Convention Conference 2012

I participated in Global IP Convention conference 2012 in Jan 2012. It was a good experience overall. The first session I attended was a mock jury trial for a patent infringement case, where I enacted the role of fact witness (inventor) from the plaintiff's side. The second session was a presentation given by me on the relevance of Utility Model protection in India.

Conference On "ICT-IPR Trends and Challenges in Globalised World"

I was invited to speak in the above mentioned conference on April 21, 2011. The conference was organized by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), C-DAC and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India. I have reproduce the conference objective from their brochure at the end of this post.

The topic given to me was "Role of IPR in the digital economy : European perspective". The session was chaired by Dr. Anindya Sircar, Head IP Cell, Infosys. Other speakers included Ms. Archana Shankar, Senior Partner, Anand & Anand; and Mr. Nishant Ramani, Head IP Consulting and Strategy, Brain League.

It was a nice experience presenting to the audience and participating in a panel discussion with the distinguished speakers. More details to follow in later posts.

Conference Objective:
Electronics and Information technology has emerged as an enabler for innovations in virtually all fields of technology. Technology changes are taking place rapidly, creating more avenues for business. The commercial stakes are very high which can be gauged from the fact that between 10-15% of patenting activities in the world are related to this field. Being a specialized and rapidly evolving field, handling IPR issues requires specialized knowledge. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a premier institute under the patronage of the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MC&IT), Government of India along with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organizing a one day conference on “ICT-IPR Trends and Challenges in Globalised World” at New Delhi. The main objective of the conference is to discuss issues and methodologies so that the Indian ICT community especially SME’s and Researchers get updated, so as to meet the challenges of the present innovation based global economic ecosystem. The conference also aims to build greater awareness and develop insights into the complex mechanism of creation, ownership and protection of Intellectual Property (IP).
